Year 2012, I was feeling weak and head drastic change in my working career. My grandfather noticed a slight swollen lump near my throat.
Dr. Jaswinder Saluja, ENT. is my uncle at Apollo and he suggested me to meet Dr.Umanath Nayak.
We had shown all my reports and he was very direct to tell me that I might have a thyroid cancer which is not life threatening and will not effect my life going ahead. For once I was shattered but I want to thank all the doctors at Apollo that supported me throughout this procedure. Before surgery I had so many doctors motivating me to stay strong as this will not effect much and the cancer will be removed from my body. The surgery was completed successfully and it was so well conducted that I have no scar on my neck.
Dr Umanath Nayak and his team are so motivational that they want their patients to be extremely comfortable so that they don’t panic. He does my follow up procedures every 3 to 6 months so that I am healthy.

Hi all, It was in the year 2013, December in California. After a hectic on call work, while relaxing, my hand involuntarily touched a part of neck and I could feel a swollen part on my neck. I was having a little bit of swallowing uneasiness which I thought was due to normal cough and cold. Later I could relate it to the swollen thyroid. I waited around 2-3 weeks to see if it would subside. As with any normal person I just googled and found out various possibilities, also found out that men with swollen thyroid have high chances of it being a carcinoma. As a biotechnologist myself, first I was mentally prepared to hear anything (my wife was carrying my first baby in about a month or so). I went to a doctor and his initial findings is that it’s a thyroid nodule and wanted a ultra sound to it. The ultra sound showed a 4cm nodule with fluid with features of a papillary. He then referred me to an endocrinologist for futher treatment. She ordered for FNAC to confirm. And within few days she called up and confirmed it is a “Papillary” and asked me to come up for a follow-up with an oncologist. In the meanwhile my wife delivered a baby girl. Believe me till date they don’t know that I have a carcinoma, I have been covering up with some technical words.
In March 2014 I had my total thyroidectomy in USA with a few lymph nodes also removed and had RAI also. I moved back to India due to some issues. I thought everything was normal until around in July 2015 when the ultra sound showed few lymph nodes enlargement. After doing a FNAC it was confirmed a secondary Papillary deposits. A PET-CT was also performed to determine the exact locations to plan a surgery. As I was alone following up all my health data without informing my family members I have to decide where to get a surgery. I was really sceptical about treatment in India due to the experience in USA (it was an out patient surgery and I was sent home the same day). After googling and thorough understanding, I contacted Dr. Umanath Nayak and after examining everything he suggested for a surgery, we immediately went for a full neck dissection surgery in Sept 2015 and it was all successful. I had a Radio Iodine therapy and every 6 months follow-up. Till date no recurrence. I can confidently say I was very much satisfied with the treatment by Dr. Umanath Nayak numerous times better than in US. I like how fast he gets to understand the problem and give his analysis. The only two persons in my family know about my carcinoma is my brother and my cousin who helped me during surgery. Being mentally prepared and not panic is key during a major health issue. Also the doctor plays a key role and with Dr. Umanath Nayak I can be peaceful.

Hello! I had Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and Dr. Umanath diagnosed it and performed my Total Thyroidectomy in 2018. I meet Dr. Umanath every 2-3 months and trust his knowledge and expertise. Post the surgery, my calcium levels dropped and I’ve been taking calcium supplements for 2 years now.
Also, more recently, I’ve been having dryness around my eyes and mild irritation which makes me want to rub my eyes constantly. Could it be because of eye strain or do I need to be concerned? Sometimes, my eyelids swell up when I rub my eyes and then they subside when I apply Cortimycin.
Just Googled it and read about Graves’ ophthalmopathy. Got a little concerned and wanted to share this with the group.
I’ve only been having sensitivity and irritation this past week or ten days. I’ve been using eye drops ever since.
Thank you for reading, group!

Prolonged and continuous screen time causes dryness of the eyes since you may not be blinking as often as you should be. Take regular breaks away from the screen, evey 15 minutes or so, close your eyes for some time to allow natural lubrication to occur. You may also use methyl cellulose eye drops which helps to keep the eyes moist.
